Happy World Whale Day! Today we are celebrating the historic return of blue whales to their South Georgian foraging grounds. Only 50 years ago, these majestic marine mammals were almost extinct after years of commercial whaling. Between 1998 and 2018, only one blue whale was sighted in these waters. But 2020 saw an incredible spike in sightings, with 58 in February alone! We are thrilled to see these graceful giants reclaiming their territory. Have you ever seen a blue whale? Are you in need of a fix of Antarctica now? Historian and Aurora Expeditions’ expedition team member, Nina Gallo, has been spending the majority of 2020 in the beautiful Blue Mountains in New South Wales. She’s also been spending her time doing the quintessential 2020 activities - learning new skills, growing a pretty impressive veg patch, trying out some new recipes and working with the Blue Mountains Bush Search and Rescue Team. However, outside the realm of the ordinary 2020 pastimes, Nina has published her first book ‘Antarctica’, in collaboration with Australian Geographic. Everyone that has been on in one of Nina’s lecture rooms onboard our expeditions knows how captivating her history presentations are and what an amazing storyteller she is. This beautiful book is not only filled with gorgeous images but also fascinating information about the continents history, wildlife and unique environment. There is also an important chapter on climate change, and how this is affecting Antarctica’s ice, oceans and food webs. You can find out more about this book on the Australian Geographic website.

Have you ever seen a Cape Barren goose? With its bright pink legs and lime green cere (skin above the bill), this large grazing bird cuts a fashionable figure strutting along the windswept islands to the south of Australia. These rare geese like to roost by the water and are often found near lagoons, lakes and swamps, where nearby grasses provide juicy sustenance. Sizeable groups congregate in a few spots across southern Australia and Tasmania, including Maria Island (Tasmania), the Investigator Group of islands (SA) and Kangaroo Island (SA). They're quite photogenic, aren't they?
