Reykjavik City Stay (Pre-Voyage)

Departure Date:
Departs in conjunction with an Aurora Expeditions' Voyage

Day 1 –  Reykjavik

Arrive in Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital and transfer by Flybus (join-in service) to Foss Hotel Reykjavik. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Accommodation: Foss Hotel – 2 nights

Day 2 – Golden Circle full day tour

Reykjavik’s city centre is a maze of narrow alleys framed with old timber houses from late the 19th to early 20th century punctuated with more recent buildings. Today, you leave the city behind to explore the classic Golden Circle with a sustainable twist!

The tour starts with a visit to Fridheimar Greenhouse where we learn about the magical methods of managing pests by using biological controls. We also learn how to grow delicious tomatoes in a eco-friendly way with the aid of geothermal heat which Iceland has in abundance. After Fridheimar, we stop at Geysir geothermal area. The Stokkur geysir shoots a column of water up to 30 metres (98 ft.) into the air every 4-8 minutes in a thrilling display of nature’s forces. The visit continues with Gullfoss Waterfalls (Golden Falls), created by the glacial Hvítá River (White River), which tumbles and plunges in a double cascade into a crevice some 32 metres (105 ft.) deep.  After stopping for lunch (own expense), we explore the active geothermal area of Haukadalur which contains the famous Geysir and Strokkur geysers, and many other hot springs. Most active nowadays Strokkur is the most active of the geyser, erupting hot water and steam to a height of 25 metres (82 ft) every 5-7 minutes.

We also visit Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll around the country’s most sacred site, home of the oldest existing national parliament in the world, the Alþingi, and major events in the history of Iceland. Thingvellir is a place of fascinating natural beauty, a spectacular geological vista, set on a vast plain flanked by large fissures, right by Iceland’s largest lake, Thingvallavatn. The mid-Atlantic rift is clearly visible; a rift that is forming as Iceland is being pulled apart by tectonic forces. Here, the North-American and the Eurasian continental plates drift apart by 19mm (¾”) a year and a rift valley is forming.

Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3 – Blue Lagoon / Reykjavik

Today you will have a day of indulgence at the Blue Lagoon – one of Iceland’s most popular attractions. The Blue Lagoon is a natural geothermal pool in the middle of a large and dramatic lava field, and an oasis that owes its existence to a nearby geothermal power plant.

We stop for a refreshing bathe or a swim in the inviting, rejuvenating and pleasantly warm mineral-rich water (36°C-38°C/100-110°F), famed for its reputed healing properties. The pool’s warm water and natural active ingredients such as mineral salts, silica and blue green algae soothe the muscles and an indoor pool and geothermal sauna are also on the site. Bathing in this surreal environment is a unique experience not to be missed.

Return to your hotel for an evening at leisure. Tonight’s accommodation is included as part of the Iceland Circumnavigation (ICE001G) or Iceland, Greenland & East Canada (IAR001G) voyages. Additional charge for accommodation applies otherwise.
