Dr Mari FleriExpedition Doctor
Mari was born in Japan and moved to the UK as a child with her family. After qualifying in medicine, she travelled around the world, and fell in love with Australia. She later moved to Sydney with her husband, who is himself a paediatrician, and three children where she has lived for the past 20 years. She currently works as a GP for Justice Health, providing much needed healthcare to prison inmates, as well as part time work in emergency services.
Mari is no stranger to working in remote conditions however. For the past 10 years she has worked on and off in remote indigenous communities in Australia. She has worked with asylum seekers on Christmas Island, Nauru and in Sydney. She has also volunteered on a medical trek in Nepal and assisted conservation research teams as the camp medic in the forests of Madagascar and the Amazon rainforest in Peru. She loves trekking and kayaking in her spare time.
Mari had her first voyage with Aurora Expeditions last season, when she worked as a doctor on the last voyages onboard the Polar Pioneer and is now looking forward to being one of the first doctors on the Greg Mortimer.
