Margaret Mortimer grew up in Melbourne, where she belonged to the girl guides and the pony club, so walking, camping and exploring came naturally to her naturally.
Margaret moved to the Blue Mountains in 1972 and ran the Bay Tree Tea Shop where she met the climbing fraternity. She learnt to rock climb, went trekking in the Indian Himalaya in 1983, sailed to Antarctica with the Bicentennial Expedition to climb Mt Minto 1988 and joined Greg Mortimer at base camp when he climbed K2 in 1990.
Margaret trekked in Nepal and Bhutan and also climbed Carstenz Pyramid in Irian Jaya in 1995. Co-founder of Aurora Expeditions, she made many voyages to Antarctica, the Kimberley and Papua New Guinea and specialised in leading groups along the Silk Road from China to Uzbekistan.
