Map & Itinerary

Day 1 – Santiago to Stanley, Falkland Islands(Malvinas)
Make your way to the airport to board your flight in either Santiago or Punta Arenas. Arrive in Stanley in the afternoon before enjoying a tour of the Falkland Island's charming capital. You'll board the Polar Pioneer this afternoon. Take some time to settle in & explore your new home for the next 18 days. Stand out on deck and watch Stanley fade in the distance as we begin our adventure!
Days 2 to 3 – Scotia Sea
Between the Falklands and South Georgia, stand out on the deck for the fascinating parade of seabirds that follow our wake, or perhaps keep watch for breaching whales. Our team of experts will also entertain and educate abut South Georgia as we get closer to our first landing. If time and weather permits, we may pass close by Shag Rocks - a fascinating group of rocky inlets protruding from the sea.
Days 4 to 8 – South Georgia
We'll have ample time to explore the island's spectacular northern coast as spring brings an explosion of life. We visit wildlife havens that include the world's largest king penguin rookeries, majestic albatross nests and beaches cluttered with basking elephant seals, feisty fur seals and penguins. Kayakers revel in paddling the coastline's nooks and crannies, accompanied by playful seal pups. We learn of Shackleton's Epic and hope to retrace his expedition's final steps from Fortuna Bay to Stromness. In Grytviken, we enjoy a guided tour of the fascinating South Georgia Museum, and toast 'The Boss' and his right-hand man, Frank Wild, at their graveside.
Days 9 to 10 – Scotia Sea
En route for Antarctica, we head southward along the Scotia Sea, the same stretch of ocean that Shackleton and five of his men crossed in order to find help for the rest of their crew. As excitement builds for Antarctica, catch up with fellow expeditioners in the bar, keep watch for wildlife alongside our naturalist, or learn more of the Shackleton story from our historian.
Day 11 – Elephant Island (weather permitting)
We approach Point Wild, a bleak, rocky spit along Elephant Island's dramatic north coast. If condition allow, we'll Zodiac cruise, possibly even step ashore, to pay tribute to Shackleton's 22 men who survived here for four months, living under upturned lifeboats.
Days 12 to 15 – Antarctic Peninsula
Once we arrive in the calmer waters of the Bransfield & Gerlache Straits, we'll generally be landing two to three times a day. We may encounter pack ice, and penguin rookeries alive with courtship, mating and nest-building. Leopard seals and South Polar skuas are on the hunt, while shy giant petrels incubate their eggs. With nearly 24 hours daylight, we pack in as much as possible, visit historic sites, attempting to land on the continent proper and Zodiac cruising amongst spectacular icebergs.
Days 16 to 17 – Drake Crossing
Our landings come to an end as we enter the Drake Passage for our return journey to South America. With lectures and videos to complete our Antarctic experience, there is still plenty of time to experience the magic of the Southern Ocean. As we approach the tip of South America, our Captain may may sail close to legendary Cape Horn, time and weather permitting.
Day 18 – Ushuaia, Argentina
During the morning we travel up the Beagle Channel to dock in Ushuaia, then transfer to our hotel or continue our onward journeys, perhaps to discover the wonders of Patagonia on a connecting Patagonia Discovery Trek!
