Iceland Climate

If you were to find Iceland on a map, you’ll notice that it’s located very close to the Arctic Circle. It’s this proximity that drives much of Iceland’s weather and climate – even during the summer months when Aurora Expedition treks take place.

With an average temperature of around 12-15 degrees Celsius, Iceland’s summer weather is ideal for trekking. Of course, as you explore various regions of Iceland, you’ll start to see the climatic differences.

For example, in the south where the capital Reykjavik is located, the climate is warmer and often wetter and windier than other parts of the country thanks to the North Atlantic Current. The Central Highlands, where the snow-capped mountains are, is the coldest region, while the isolated northern coast is drier than the rest of Iceland.

Aurora Expeditions’ departures are between June and mid-September meaning you’ll experience warmer temperatures and less rain than at other times of the year. There will be still snow in the mountains but walking and trekking is made easier and more comfortable thanks to the lack of footfall.
