Extensions - The Ghan With Uluru, Kings Canyon & Alice Springs
Combining your Ghan railway experience with a few stopovers is the ideal way to see the most famous sites in central Australia. There are many wondrous places to see to break up the journey between Darwin and Adelaide, from the scenic wonder of Ayers Rock to the charm of Cooper Pedy. Below is an example of one such itinerary. Ask us for more options.
DAY 1: Darwin to Katherine
This morning it’s time to join The Ghan where you’ll travel south past lush, tropical scenery to Katherine and stop for around 4 hours giving you enough time to look around town or enjoy a spectacular Whistle Stop Tour at Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park.
DAY 2: Alice Springs & Uluru
Awake to the lovely desert scenery of Central Australia before arriving in Alice Springs. Board your coach and travel to Uluru through the West MacDonnell and James Ranges. Visit a camel farm and if you’re in the mood for a bit of fun, go for a quick ride on a camel. Stop at Mt. Ebenezer roadhouse for lunch and Atila (Mt. Conner) before arriving at Ayers Rock Resort. End the day with a sensational sunset viewing of Uluru while enjoying nibbles and a glass of wine.
DAY 3: Kata Tjuta (Olgas) & Alice Springs
You've seen the sunset, now see a whole different side of the changing colours of Uluru at sunrise. Then it’s on to Kata Tjuta where your guide will escort you on a fantastic 2-3 hour walk between the valleys of conglomerate rock. At the Valley of the Winds lookout you’ll have more than enough time to not only enjoy the views over the central valley of Kata Tjuta, but also take some photographs so you can remember it forever. Your day finishes with a trip back to Alice Springs.
DAY 4: Rejoin The Ghan to Adelaide.
The train doesn’t leave until early afternoon so there’s plenty of time for one more look around before your transfer to the station. Once aboard you’ll enjoy Gold Kangaroo Service and the timeless outback scenery as you head south overnight to Port Augusta.
DAY 5: Arrive Adelaide
Enjoy one last breakfast on board before ending your holiday at Adelaide’s Keswick Rail Terminal.
