Extensions - Iceland Self Drive Adventures

The alternative way to see Iceland for the independent traveller. Below is a recommended itinerary for discovering Iceland’s great outdoors. Please contact Aurora Expeditions for details on other suggested itineraries.

Day 1. Arrival in Iceland

Pick up your Avis renal car at Keflavik airport. Perhaps enjoy a visit to the Blue Lagoon and explore the Reykjanes Peninsula. Overnight in Reykjavik.

Day 2. Saga Valley Borgafjordur

Drive along the scenic Whale-Fjord and explore the Saga Valley Borgarfjördur with waterfalls, hot springs and historic sites. Stay 2 nights in Borgafjordur area.

Day 3. Snæfellsnes Peninsula awaits you

Visit and view the many old houses of the pretty fishing village Stykkisholmur. A special attraction is the glacier covered volcano, Snæfellsjökull, and weather allowing you could take an optional snow sledge tour to the top.

Day 4. Skagafjordur

Drive north to Skagafjördur, the valley of the horses. En route we recommend river rafting, horseback riding or driving around Vatnsnes Peninsula with a walk to the seal colony at Hindisvik. Overnight in Skagafjordur.

Day 5. Akureyri and Godafoss

Visit Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland, and Godafoss - the waterfall of the Gods. Stay 2 nights at Laugar or Húsavík

Day 6.

Explore the natural wonders of Lake Myvatn, the hot springs at Námaskard and the lava fields at Krafla.

Day 7.

We recommend a whale-watching cruise from Husavík, or a visit to Europe’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss, before driving on to East Iceland for overnight stay.

Day 8. Vatnajokull Glacier

Enjoy the dramatic landscape and fishing villages of the East fjords before reaching Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajokull. Overnight near Hofn.

Day 9. Skaftafell National Park

A long drive with many natural wonders awaits you today as you pass a glacial lagoon, Skaftafell National Park, many waterfalls, black lava beaches & rugged lava fields.

Day 10. Golden Circle

Visit Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysir Hot Springs, Kerid volcanic crater and Pingvellir National Park, before driving back to Reykjavik.

Day 11.

Depart Reykjavik today.
