Shaped by the staggering force of massive glaciers millions of years ago, the temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska reveals wildlife-rich fjords and spectacular scenery. From ship and shore, witness massive icebergs, calving glaciers, and majestic forests that are home to an array of wildlife including black and brown bears, wolves, moose, mink, otters, eagles, and sea birds. The waters boast the northern hemisphere’s largest concentration of humpback whales, as well as home to orca, seals, Steller sea lions, salmon and porpoise.
Rich in history, the area’s channels and waterways have served as an important travel corridor for the native people, and continue to do so as communities continue to thrive on the farthest reaches of the wild Alaska coastline. Native islanders share their stories and culture, and local carver’s showcase their art of carving and restoring totems; an important tradition passed on for centenaries.
On board, we watch for wildlife on the outer decks, or enjoy the scenery up close as we Zodiac or kayak the secluded bays. Guided lush forest treks and longer hikes provide fantastic viewing opportunities, as well as the chance to visit rarely visited glacial lakes. You’ll even get a chance to witness the magical sights and sounds of the sea life below with our on board hydrophone and bow-mounted underwater camera; or if you’re game, take a closer look with our polar snorkeling option.
