Map & Itinerary

Days 1 to 3 – Quito & Otavalo
From World Heritage Quito, we visit the Indian markets of Otavalo and Peguche; explore Quito’s San Roque district, La Ronda and the political centre – Plaza Grande including the baroque La Compañía de Jesus Church.
Day 4 – Coca & Napo River
We fly to Coca and catch a motorised canoe down the Napo River to Sacha Lodge, set amidst pristine Amazon rainforest. Here we meet our guides and take our first night-outing, perhaps spotlighting for caimans.
Days 5 to 8 – Yasuni National Park
Wake to a raucous dawn chorus, traverse the 275 m long canopy walkway, explore blackwater-flooded forests by canoe, and primary rainforests on foot. We find monkeys, tapirs, anacondas and caimans. In Yasuni National Park, we visit clay licks alive with parrots and parakeets, and meet the local indigenous people. After our final morning walk, we board motorised canoes to Coca for flights to Quito.
Day 9 – Andean Cloud Forests
A fascinating, three-hour drive, stopping at archaeological ruins, takes us into the Andean cloud forests. After an introductory briefing at luxurious Mashpi Lodge, we begin exploring our mountain forest surrounds.
Days 10 to 11 – Andean Cloud Forests
Dawn bird watching, treks into primary forest in search of howler monkeys, brightly-plumed birds, spectacular butterflies and hummingbirds. Plant-lovers swoon over orchids, bromeliads and passion flowers. Take a ride through the canopy on the unique Sky Bike, or relax with a massage or Jacuzzi.
Day 12 – Copal Falls & Quito
After a pre-breakfast outing to see insect-hunting birds, we walk to the thundering Copal Falls. After lunch we return to our base in Quito.
Days 13 to 15 – Avenue of Volcanoes & Cuenca
Driving south on the Pan American Highway, we climb into the Ecuadorean highlands and along the spectacular Avenue of Volcanoes. Over the next three days we visit Cotopaxi National Park to meet the birds and animals of the moorlands, dine and stay in historic, elegant hacienda’s, visit Patate, Baños and Riobamba; and ride the Devil’s Nose Train. From photogenic waterfalls to active volcanoes it’s a memorable journey including the charming mountain city of Cuenca.
Days 16 to 17 – Guayaquil & Baltra, Galapagos
After exploring the cobble-stone streets, flower-filled plazas and fascinating museums, we have lunch, then board a flight to Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city. After a comfortable night, we fly from Guayaquil to Baltra in the Galapagos Islands. We’re met by expedition staff from M/Y Isabela II and transferred to our expedition ship.
Days 18 to 24 – Galapagos
Each day of seven, our expert local guides take us on outings to snorkel with sea lions, turtles and penguins; trek across lava flows alive with marine iguanas and enjoy courtship displays by fantastic blue and red-footed boobies, or red throat-puffing frigate birds. Our focus is the southern islands of the archipelago.
